We All Asked For This?…

In a world that seems to be spinning out of control, some say toward extinction, it is easy to separate from the equation and say, “Well, I don’t want this, I did not choose this, I did not create this.” When we watch what is playing out on the global screen, we can be quick to claim no responsibility for it and blame it on “them.”

But to do this is to deny a fundamental idea of Universal Law, where things work somehow literally and exactly. The Butterfly Effect is all around us, and we don’t feel the breeze on our own cheek.

I was reading a book and it said, “Everything you wish to be, you already are.” (The Dream, the Journey, Eternity, and God). I find that to be a powerful truth in the realm of worldly manifestation. The statement itself refers to experiencing what we want to experience and how close that actually is. But again it works literally, meaning that what we are bringing of ourselves at a deeper level is what we will experience in the world, over time. Our micro movements flutter the winds of the collective “weather” and in time channel the currents in new directions. So if we don’t like what we see, our otherwise hopeless feelings about the world must be redirected inside of ourselves where the biggest change actually happens.

In times like these, I’m reminded that rather than getting defensive and holding tightly to the idea that I am not responsible for what is happening in the world, how “they” are the enemy, it’s time to double down and go even deeper, peel back more layers to what lives inside of me that is participating in the very thing I don’t want. And just as importantly, what lives inside of me that is just like everyone else? Am I so different from others? Don’t we really want the same things underneath all of the drama and division? What is the actual frailty screaming out that just wants to be accepted and lovingly belong in the family?

What can be so crazy-making is that it seems that fighting, killing, war, pillaging, separating families, and all the rest is antithetical to the very things that we want-- peace, harmonious relations, equality, prosperity for all, an environment that flourishes. So why does it even happen?

I don’t have the answers, but I do find that, when I peel back the layers within myself, I see the seeds of unrest that have come from partly dysfunctional conditioning, the kind of conditioning that leaps to fear-based competition rather than equality-based collaboration. Fears lead to victimhood which leads to desperation which leads to protection which leads to lashing out at others, either verbally or physically. And we are in an epidemic of this behavior.

But, right now, today, we have choices. We can remain the same, or we can peel back the layers and directly experience what lives inside of us that, if we choose to focus on it and transform it, we can evolve our ability to be a more compassionate and collaborative participant in our world. This isn’t a concept in the mind, it is an experience we will have that our immediate environment feels more respectful and cooperative, and more joyful and empowered. We will experience ourselves showing up in different ways, even in the face of adversity, which ripples out and creates healthier and happier relationships. Buddha said, “Our most important challenge is to participate with Joy in the sorrows of the world.”

I guess the question becomes, is it worth it to change? And, who can change us but ourselves? Can we be an island of peace in an ocean of turmoil?

Food for thought, as we enter a great season of enjoying the bountiful harvests!

Many blessings to us all on our journey, Melanie
