From Scared to Sacred…two little letters, one big shift

Well I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling urged this year forward in positive ways, hopeful ways, more empowering ways. Even in the midst of obvious chaos and destruction, power-mongering and hatred, it feels like we have been climbing the roller coaster to the top at which point we just have to let go and ride the ride. But in that space, I feel a natural turning toward that which is more meaningful, personally and collectively, feeling that exhilarated sense of holding ourselves together as we fall down the other side, trusting that our life force has enough meaning to make it to the finish.

While contemplating fear, in my mind I saw the image of the word Scared, and I saw two letters move around and the word become Sacred. It was reflective of a conversation I had with a friend recently about an Arabic singing performance I recently did, and how I got through that performance despite feeling fear.

The most core experience that grounds me to what is meaningful for me is connection with my spiritual understanding, and how that has driven me all of my life. I don’t use the term spiritual one-dimensionally, as I believe everything is spiritual, and that it is up to each of us to find the larger more cosmic context for ourselves to relate to the Whole. There are infinite expressions of that. It’s not linear, nor on a timeline. That’s what makes it so elusive.

And in the spirit of that, no pun intended, writing this blog is really just an acknowledgment that there exists a “Sacred” understanding available to each and every one of us, a place where we totally trust, and release our egoic human fears in favor of a power that has created everything and contains the infinite capacity to guide us perfectly in our singular lives. Because we can’t get away from it. Just try.

A practice that I like is one where you close your eyes, breathe, feel the breath and space just immediately touching the body, and notice how if you try to separate yourself from that space just beyond the body, you can’t. It is connected, there is no “space” between you and what surrounds you. There is no actual border. If you expand this, it is clear there is no “space” between any of it. Crazy right? But Wow.

So, when fear arises, my choice is to tap into the Sacred and bring it to the scared, and in that I feel that whatever I’m doing has a much deeper meaning for me, maybe even a purpose, though I might not fully know what that is. Being in the flow of the Sacred is a beautiful way to live life. Listening for the Sacred, either while being in nature, being with friends and family, enjoying cultural events, playing sports, studying, performing, cooking, promotes wonderful feelings inside the body and mind. It can bring wisdom and insight to the more fearful moments and soften the rough edges. It can even be profound.

So in the Spirit of this, I wish you a Sacred 2026, with all of the wisdom, hope, inspiration, joy, satisfaction, contentment, and love that comes with that. May you feel it deeply and share it with those you cherish. May we each allow the alchemy of the Sacred to transmute the scared in us, creating a new and joyful life experience.

Best wishes, Melanie
